Escrima Martial Arts

   Posted by: admin   in fight

Escrima is a Filipino martial arts, which make use of sticks, knives, and swords in fighting. During the Spanish era, escrima was taught to the students as part of their subject, but later on was banned because of fear of insurgency. Today, learning this fighting skill is made possible through the help of many grandmasters.

Escrima or eskrima is also referred to as the Filipino martial arts (FMA), which came from the Spanish word esgrima or fencing. To be more familiar about this art of fighting, below are some important points to know about escrima:

History

The origin of escrima is difficult to determine because even before the Spanish regime, the Filipinos already possess these fighting skills. It was believed that the Indonesian and Chinese have greatly influenced this kind of fighting technique especially the Kung Fu martial arts. This was evident when the Spaniards came to Cebu, Philippines to conquer the whole archipelago. The Spaniards were amazed with the Filipinos' fighting techniques and with this, the Spaniards prohibit them from carrying daggers, bolos and other weapons as well as practicing their martial arts. However the Filipinos strongly opposed to this; thus, they thought of some ways to continue practicing in a way that they won't get caught. Incorporating it in a dance using a native music is their way of concealing it from the invaders.

The Martial Arts

Escrima uses two techniques both empty-handed fight and armed or with a weapon fight, so that the fighters can effectively carry out the fight under any situation. The one who practices the martial arts is known for several names like escrimador, kalista, arnisador, and manangali. It is a Filipino martial arts that needs coordination, footwork, and use of weapons.

Gadgets

As it became famous around the world, escrima has been officially taught as a sport having an increasing number of students. Aside from the usual weapons used like the sticks, knives and swords; other tools and supplies are used as an added protection. Here are some of the necessary supplies and gears used namely: padded stick, full-contact head protector, full-contact body protector, full contact gloves, full-contact arm protector, and full-contact leg protector.

Grandmasters

Today, escrima is already popular not just in the Philippines, but in other foreign countries as well like United States, United Kingdom and Australia. This became popular when Hollywood has opened its doors to this kind of martial arts. A Filipino student of escrima taught the skill to Bruce Lee, which later on gained acceptance and popularity. Learning escrima can be very exciting; however it takes a lot of patience and determination to learn the technique. There are several grandmasters from the Philippines that have contributed a lot in the expansion of escrima namely: Cronnie Cabatingan, Rene Latosa, Dan Inosanto, Leo Giron, and more.

Master Han Chen Jing is from Guandong, China, where he teaches the internal martial art his father was so famous for, Han Shi Yiquan. Master Han was given the lineage of this incredible art upon his fathers passing in 2004. Master Han's skill has made his teaching widely sought by martial artists from around the world.  He is a third generation lineage holder of Yi Quan.

This is to be the first time Han Shi Yi Quan is to visit the United States. His knowledge and experience has never been spread this far east of his native China. Yi Quan instruction will be open to the public on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009 from 12:45 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009 with two classes, one from  8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and another from 12:30 p.m. to  3:30 p.m. The workshop will be held at the University of Hawaii-Hilo Old Gym (off of Kapiolani Street.) All skill levels are welcome.

Anyone who is curious can learn from the most advanced martial artist.

This four-hour, three-day workshop will cover the basics on the internal art of Yi Quan and how to understand its connection with void, nature, as well as advanced concepts of internal martial arts, with a unique method of testing and understanding Han shi Yi Quan at its core has, the universal principle for fist, life, health, art, and spirituality.

Yi Quan at its core is a key that can unlock many internal martial arts, integrating the ancient health dance of china and the embodiment of Chinese philosophy and thought. At the core of Yi Quan is its principle, which makes Yi Quan quite unique. This core is the heart of real health, understanding and combat ability.

Many martial arts has Yi Quan principle at its core, but with no way of testing or understanding, and many martial artists from around the world have sought out Master Han in his native China to understand what is real.

To put it another way, all of us share a common blueprint that is discernable and quantifiable. It is this core principle that makes Yi Quan instruction singular. This principle is the same for the body's health state, or the same for artistic expression, or any meaningful advances in an individual's personal wisdom.  Yi Quan has been taught as the ultimate Chi Kung, The ultimate Fist, and the ultimate understanding of artistic expression.

Following the workshop with Master Han, ongoing classes are to be taught in Hilo and Pahoa by two Hilo natives who were trained in China by Master Han.

Free Weight Loss Exercise Programs

   Posted by: admin   in fight

There are a lot of myths and fads out there when it comes to weight loss. Some say that you need to diet hard to reduce your calorie intake. Some say that diet is not important, as long as you maintain stringent weight loss exercise programs. Some take the middle road, and say that you should have a healthy diet and do some sort of exercise program.

While it is well established that a healthy diet is important, what a lot of people fail to address is what sort of exercise is the best to promote long term weight loss. Do the wrong sort of exercise and you might be wasting your time, or even working against yourself in the long run.

It has been a long held view that low intensity training is the best to burn fat. The reason put forward was that training in the low intensity zone allows the body to use oxygen and fat to fuel the exercise. (The low intensity zone is where your heart rate is at approximately 65% of your maximum heart rate threshold while exercising. Maximum heart rate is approximately 220 heart beats per minute less your age.)

Exercising in this zone for 30 minutes burns approximately 300 calories (depending on your weight) which has been established as the amount you need to burn to control weight.

The problem with this approach is that burning fat with low intensity training, while dieting, also burns protein, which is the building block of muscle. Burning muscle as well as fat to lose weight is not a desired result, as your metabolism will slow down. Research has shown that building and toning muscle is important to increase your metabolism. Why is that important? Well, if you increase your metabolism, which is the speed which your body processes food, you speed up fat burning and weight loss.

Studies at the University of New South Wales in Australia has shown that combining low intensity training with bursts of high intensity training promotes faster weight loss as well as the toning and building of muscle. This style of exercise is called interval training. The studies claim that it is possible to burn up to six times the fat than that under normal low intensity cardio training.

The training involves high intensity exercise for 8 seconds, followed by a recovery period of 12 seconds. This is repeated for 20 minutes. Make sure you warm up well. It is important to assess your fitness level before you start any interval training program, and increase the recovery periods if needed. Always check with your doctor before starting any exercise program.

The most effective methods for interval training are jogging, using a bike or a stationary exercise bike.

Losing fat and preventing muscle loss is critical to keeping the weight off permanently. It is common for weight to be put on quickly after a diet is finished, or stopping a cardio weight loss exercise program if muscle has been lost, because as muscle tone returns, protein is replaced and weight increases. That is why people sometimes experience a see-sawing effect of losing weight and putting it back on when the weight loss exercise program is stopped.

The most effective way to stop this see-sawing effect of losing weight only to regain it, and maybe even more, is to maintain muscle mass, keep your metabolism high, and target only losing that stubborn fat with weight loss exercise programs that incorporate interval training.
